Jean de La Fontaine - The Fables of La Fontaine

Marianne Moore's tranlation of Jean de la Fontaine's delightful and instructive Fables appeared in 1954, the product of eight years of painstaking work. Based on the standard French text, her version contains all twelve books and all two hundred and forty-one of the separate poems, each translated in her scrupulous style, with her keen eye for the behavior of animals (and people) and her special ability to "present for inspection, imaginary gardens with real toads in them." Miss Moore has made extensive revisions in the tranlation for this new edition.
